The first of its kind on the international film festival scene, War on Screen - Festival international de cinéma aims to provide a deeper and more diverse insight into the unparalleled links between film production and war, taken in the widest sense of the word. Its ambition is to promote the (re)discovery of an intensely vibrant field of cinema in a region directly affected by its subject matter—to show the true nature of the relationships between cinema and the many wars that shake our world. The field of cinema explored, in both the past and present, covers the whole spectrum of armed conflicts, wherever they may originate, offering a perspective on social movements, cultural events, popular uprising and political change.
A STIMULUS FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE REGION
Founded and supported by La Comète National Stage, in close collaboration with the County of Châlons, the main part of the festival will take place in the localities of Châlons-en-Champagne, Suippes and Mourmelon, supported by a programme of cultural outreach and arts education initiatives throughout the county and beyond. In establishing such intimate ties between the festival and its rural setting, one which forms a unique part of the country’s landscape, the event aims to breathe new life into an area that has been deeply affected by conflicts both past and present, and hence purge while at the same time treasuring history that still blights the region.
As an internationally unique arts and culture initiative, the festival plays a significant role in raising the position and allure of the Champagne-Ardenne region. The event brings its own unique insight into the philosophy of all film makers who, since the very invention of the medium, have employed the language of cinema to invite reflection upon the world’s conflicts, foster a better understanding of the human, political, military and social driving forces behind those conflicts and promote a spirit of peace.
